Star Wars Galaxies Jedi Interview

Haden Blackman goes into what players can expect now that the Force is growing in strength.

November 07, 2003 – Gamers that decided to get out and buy themselves a copy of Star Wars Galaxies have been waiting and waiting for the first Jedi to make an appearance in the game. As you may or may not know, while not every player will find their way to becoming a Jedi during the course of their experience in the Sony Online and LucasArts created universe, it certainly is possible. But that’s going to change pretty soon as the time is drawing nearer and nearer to when the first of Galaxies’ inhabitants will be taking that brave step forward into the realm of the Force.

Of course, whether we love it or hate it, play it or don’t play it, we’re all curious what the game will be doing with these galactic superpowers. Today, we have a big interview with Producer Haden Blackman all about the subject. There’s a lot of information here for those that are Jedi hopefuls as well as those that may have already realized that they are force sensitive. But as you’ll find out, it may be a little while before these Jedi will begin using their powers in the open. It’s a dangerous world in there and while Jedis are powerful, they also have a lot of very strong enemies to worry about.

PowerPoint Is Evil (by By Edward Tufte)

(Publicado por Wired)

Power Corrupts. PowerPoint Corrupts Absolutely.

Imagine a widely used and expensive prescription drug that promised to make us beautiful but didn’t. Instead the drug had frequent, serious side effects: It induced stupidity, turned everyone into bores, wasted time, and degraded the quality and credibility of communication. These side effects would rightly lead to a worldwide product recall.

Yet slideware -computer programs for presentations -is everywhere: in corporate America, in government bureaucracies, even in our schools. Several hundred million copies of Microsoft PowerPoint are churning out trillions of slides each year. Slideware may help speakers outline their talks, but convenience for the speaker can be punishing to both content and audience. The standard PowerPoint presentation elevates format over content, betraying an attitude of commercialism that turns everything into a sales pitch.

Of course, data-driven meetings are nothing new. Years before today’s slideware, presentations at companies such as IBM and in the military used bullet lists shown by overhead projectors. But the format has become ubiquitous under PowerPoint, which was created in 1984 and later acquired by Microsoft. PowerPoint’s pushy style seeks to set up a speaker’s dominance over the audience. The speaker, after all, is making power points with bullets to followers. Could any metaphor be worse? Voicemail menu systems? Billboards? Television? Stalin?
