you can’t compare alice cooper to johnny cash, however you can compare him to people who can bite the head off a bat.
i wouldn’t know who to compare johnny cash with though, he’s the man, period.
also, the original ‘hurt’ is by trent reznor, or nine inch nails, whatever you want to call it. it’s kind of an introspective song. makes more sense when sang by him.

I didn’t compare them or even call them equivalent, I just said it reminded me because of the start “I hurt myself today to see if I still feel I focus on the pain the only thing that’s real”. That’s all, gimme a break 😉
I know it’s from NIN but I only know Cash’s version. I think it does make sense, though differently (age instead of drugs) and the video fits, too.
