Meet the rotten cheaters ruining your online neighborhood.

Surprisingly, it’s not always about just being a dick. “It’s frustrating,” says Duncan Ariey, whose cheating ways date back to 16-bit Game Genie hacks. “To lose consistently to people who got better than you by playing six to eight hours a day while you’re at school or work—some people cheat just to even the playing field.” Latecomers are especially disadvantaged, says Ariey: “Nobody wants to turn on their new game and be killed 50 times in a row by people who have had the game longer. I know many people who cheat not to boost their win column, but to keep it from being ruined in their first few days of having a game.”

Yeaaah, whatever.

Rent a character!

According to BoingBoing: “GamePal.com will rent you a pre-played character for the massively multiplayer game of your choice, already leveled-up to the point where the game starts to get really fun, without having to do all that tedious grinding.”

Couple of things about it:

1. If the game is good, leveling is part of the fun.
2. You have to learn how to play a class/profession to actually do good.
3. If you need to spend real money to play a game properly, you suck.

Don’t grind it, dude. Do RP. It’s a game. It’s fun.

Game Dev about the Mac (now)

“One thing I’ll miss about dealing with byte-swapping issues are the interesting side-effects. For example, in Jedi Knight and Jedi Academy, if I forgot to swap a certain piece of data, your lightsaber would not attach itself to your hand but would instead be positioned in the center of the model. As it happened, this was on your crotch, facing forward. Mark Krenek had another interesting bug where, while working on Spider-Man, Spidey’s hand protruded from his butt. Glenda had another byte-swapping issue in Madden 2000 where players’ heads would rotate continuously. Good times.”
